Reach for the Light.

I ordered Hosta from the Holland bulb company. The box arrived with a sign on the front that said, “Open Immediately.” Inside were instructions to remove the roots from the plastic bag and plant them immediately. I cut an opening in the bag and pulled out what looked like a small bundle of strings sitting in dirt. The best way I can describe what I saw was a “tangled mess.”  I dug a hole in the ground and dropped the mess in, and covered it with dirt. The mess did something while it was in the dark hole. It reached for the light. turned into what looked like a symmetrical upside-down green bowl of leaves, with a flower popping out at the top.

Let’s face it. We are a mess. We wake up feeling we didn’t get enough sleep. Then we make the mistake of checking out the news. Then we go to work, and remarkably, no one remembers all the good things we did yesterday, but only remembers what we didn’t have time to do. Then we go to the cafeteria for lunch, and there is a new menu that now offers gourmet burgers to justify the price increase. When we get the credit card bill, the total on the bill does not match the total we thought in our head. Yes, we are a mess. So, what do we do when we find ourselves buried in a dark hole? What did we learn from the Hosta? We reach for the light. This is why Peter tells us in his letter that Christ called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. Wonderful in the sense that an amazing transformation takes place. We become beautiful, productive, fruit-bearing lives. So, the next time we feel like a mess. Do not panic. Just reach for the light.
