Why is St. Maria Goretti’s relic under the altar at the Chapel?
- There is a long tradition in the Church of including a relic of a martyr in or under an altar. The martyred saint has offered the supreme sacrifice in following the will of God thus imitating by grace the Lord Jesus. Upon the altar is offered the Eucharistic Sacrifice which is the sacramental re-presentation of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. As Saint Maria Goretti received the sacrifice of Christ in Holy Communion so she prepared to be herself an offering to God in fidelity to the end. St. Maria Goretti, pray for us!
