Among the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, we are blessed with brothers whose quiet fidelity speaks more loudly than any sermon. Their lives become living homilies—simple, steady, and filled with the grace of perseverance. One such priest is Fr. John Ferrara, OMV, a man whose heart has always been captivated by both the wonder of God’s creation and the tender love of His Mother.

As we celebrate his many decades of generous service, we give thanks for the ways he has shaped our community through humility, devotion, and unwavering commitment to the mission entrusted to him.

A Life Formed by Wonder

Fr. John’s story begins in Brooklyn, where two early influences, science and faith, were etched into his imagination through the magic of film. As a boy, he was mesmerized by the futuristic adventure of Destination Moon (1950). “I wanted to see it over and over again,” he recalled.

A few years later, a poster for The Miracle of Fatima, depicting the sun plummeting toward the earth, awakened in him a profound fascination with Our Lady’s interventions in the world. His mother’s bedtime stories about Mary only deepened that devotion. “I could not have enough of these stories of Mary,” he said.

These seeds would take root in surprising ways.

Journey Through the Heavens

In the 1960s, fresh out of college, Fr. John joined Grumman Aerospace and contributed to the development of the lunar module for NASA’s Apollo program. From 1965 to 1970, he worked on the very project that would place the first human beings on the moon. Looking back, he recognized that this extraordinary moment in human history was also God’s way of turning his gaze from the marvels of science toward the mysteries of faith.

After a company-wide layoff, Fr. John returned home to New York. He spent his days reading voraciously, calling rectories to ask for old theological books, and nurturing a growing devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. “Mary captivated me,” he said—a simple truth that would define the rest of his life.

A Call Answered Through Mary

In 1975, Fr. John entered the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, drawn by the congregation’s fidelity to Marian devotion and the Church. Seven years later, he was ordained a priest in St. Peter’s Basilica by St. John Paul II on June 6, 1982. Even four decades later, he reflected with humble amazement, “There is so much more to know about God.”

His priestly ministry unfolded quietly, faithfully, and with the same steady devotion that has always characterized him. He served as a hospital chaplain in Illinois, as director of St. Francis Chapel in Boston, and later took on one of the most tender tasks of love, caring for his mother as she suffered from Alzheimer’s. He often encouraged fellow Oblates navigating similar responsibilities:

“You find yourself having to do things that you never thought you could possibly do. But you are able to do it. And you rise to the occasion.” — Fr. John Ferrara, OMV

Quiet Life of Service

Since 2006, Fr. John has been a fixture at St. Joseph Retreat House, providing food for the community and tending to countless details that make guests feel welcome. For years, he hopped into the station wagon almost daily, filled it with groceries, and backed it carefully into his customary spot near the kitchen door. Even when others stepped in to help with the shopping, he would dutifully check receipts and collect coupons—small acts of stewardship done with great love.

His care extended beyond the kitchen: birthday cards for his brother Oblates, thoughtful baskets for retreat house staff, handwritten signs for guests. Never seeking attention, he simply served.

Even now, with limited mobility, he climbs an extra flight of stairs on Sundays to join the community for a movie, an offering of presence that speaks volumes about his love of fraternity.

“Being in community is a great asset,” he shared, grateful for the laughter and camaraderie that fill our home.

Reflection of St. Joseph

Fr. John’s life mirrors the hidden strength of St. Joseph—faithful, gentle, and enduring. Scripture records no words from Joseph, yet his actions shaped the Holy Family and helped Jesus “advance in wisdom and age and favor before God and man” (Luke 2:52). In much the same way, Fr. John’s quiet, consistent love has shaped the lives of those around him and has enriched our community in countless, humble ways.

To you, Fr. John—thank you. Thank you for your witness, your devotion to Our Lady, your steady perseverance, and your generous heart. St. Joseph would be proud of you.
