Spiritual direction has the power to guide you to a closer relationship with God. It’s an important cornerstone of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary as we work toward a rebirth of spirituality in today’s world. Through spiritual direction, we can help people hear and respond to the movement of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

What Is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual DirectionSpiritual direction is an encounter among God, the person being directed, and the spiritual director with the goal of discovering and growing a relationship between the person being directed and God. Spiritual directors work with you to open yourself to the Lord’s communication, helping you listen and respond to God, grow in intimacy with Him, and carry out the consequences of the relationship.

Rather than a one-time meeting, it is a journey where the director, mature in their faith, guides you to a stronger faith. Through the journey, you’ll learn to notice experiences of God in prayer and daily life, evoking a greater awareness and understanding of God’s presence. Through careful guidance, you’ll also begin to discover the gifts God has given, how to use them in our world, and other benefits of spiritual direction.

The Oblates’ approach to Catholic spiritual direction is rooted in the evocative-contemplative style of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. They include prayers, meditations, reflections, questions and directions carefully designed to seek out God in your life, grow a relationship, and discern His will.

Spiritual Directors

Oblates receive extensive training in spiritual direction, along with precise theological training according to the mind of the Holy Father and the Magisterium of the Church. However, not all spiritual directors within our ministries are priests. We offer spiritual director training to interested lay people mature in their faith and personal relationship with the Lord at our Lanteri Center in Denver, Colorado and at St. Joseph Retreat House in Milton, Massachusetts.

Experiencing the Lord Through the Sacraments

In addition to teaching people to pray with the Word of God, the Oblates lead souls to a deeper experience of the Lord’s healing love in the sacraments. Discover great resources and books about the spiritual life and see the benefits that adoring the Eucharist can bring to your spiritual journey.

Online Directed Retreats

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat House, a ministry staffed by the Oblates, is offering online directed retreats with trained spiritual directors. They are one-on-one and confidential with options for 3, 5, or 8-day virtual retreats.
